Monkeys Resort is a new, luxury surf resort amid the great waves of the southern Telo Islands off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. You’ll have Monkeys surf break a short distance from your villa at Monkeys Resort or take a boat ride to the range of other great Telos breaks. Have a surf, head back to your villa for breakfast, take a rest and then head out again. It’s the easiest days surfing you’ll ever have. There’s a maximum 10 surfers in the resort at any one time, so you’re sure to get your share of the waves.
The luxuriously appointed Moneys Resort has private, well furnished, air-con villas with wide balconies and ensuite bathrooms. All boat transfers to the waves are included, as well as accommodation, three meals, snacks and water each day. Everything is looked after for you, so all you have to do is think about that next session!
The southern region of the Telo islands has an abundance of high quality waves to suit all levels of surfer from beginners to experienced or professional. “The Telos” are about halfway between Nias to the north and the Mentawais to the south. Indian Ocean swells hit this region all year long, with the most consistent conditions from February to October. The biggest surf hits in June and July, but excellent waves occur year round.
Monkeys Resort enjoys a prime location on a perfect bay at the south end of the island of Tanahbala. The surf here is ultra-consistent in the 3-5-foot range, with lefts and rights that work in all tides and opposite wind directions, virtually guaranteeing somewhere offshore every day.
“Monkeys”, the resort’s home break, is a very consistent right, starting from an A-frame take-off then zipping across a long wall (200+ metres long!) to the channel. Take a short walk from your villa and paddle out or just take a small boat from the resort beach.
While Monkeys works on even the smallest swell, when it’s running medium and more another three right handers start firing nearby – Outer Monkeys, Coffins and New School.
Unlike the Mentawais, where most waves go left, Telos offers numerous lefts & rights catering for all standards, with a choice of world class barrels and fun, deep-water shoulders. The Monkeys Resort speedboat, 11m long with twin outboards, can average 25 knots, giving surfers access to a variety of waves over a wider area. The smaller boat does transit back and forth to Monkeys point, so the big boat is available for exploring more distant breaks.
The Monkeys Resort Surf Guide will make sure each day’s surfing is one to remember. He’ll make sure you get plenty of the best waves on offer in the region and keep you safe in the water with all the knowledge of the local weather patterns, swells and tides.
New, luxury Beach-Front Villas are fully air-conditioned with ensuite bathroom, and large balconies overlooking palm trees and our premier surf break, “Monkeys”. Each villa has its own comfortable lounge and dining area inside, and comfy outdoor chairs to enjoy the stunning sunrise from the front deck and the tropical sunset from the back. At night, open the windows and turn on the ceiling fan for a natural, cooling breeze while you sleep; use the air-con for extra comfort during the heat of the day. For families, the villas can be easily reconfigured with a king bed and two single beds.
There’s also a Luxury Double Story Villa, for a large family, group or two families sharing. The rooms are larger than the single villas and the decks are huge, with outstanding views across the bay to the surf. The villa has fans in every room, plus full air conditioning and bathrooms upstairs and downstairs.
Monkeys Resort has a Wifi Network, for all portable devices so you can send photos, make calls and rest assured that you can get in touch or be reached from home.
The spacious Lounge & Dining area includes dining tables, TV, lounge area, bar and massage room. There’s plenty of room at Monkeys Resort to join and mingle with other guests or chill out in a corner by yourself.
The Cuisine is a combination of tasty, local Indonesian culinary delights with some of the best and heartiest Western style meals. Wake up to a barista made coffee to your liking and a breakfast array of cereals, eggs, toast and fruits. At lunchtime, enjoy a full meal or a simple fresh wrap with chicken or fish and salad. Freshly squeezed juices are available any time, and you can purchase beer, wine or mixed drinks whenever you like. Dinners offer a feast of chicken, fish, beef and vegetable dishes that will make each night a unique dining experience. All meals are served in the Monkeys Resort main restaurant/bar called “Max’s” – Max the chef has worked at resorts in the Telos for over 8 years, and knows just what hungry surfers need every day!
Great surfing around the Telo Islands is not the only attraction at Monkeys Resort – there’s a lot to do for non-surfers, or surfers who want a break from the waves. The surrounding reefs are great for snorkelling with amazing sea life. Take out a stand up paddle board for a quiet paddle on the calm water of the lagoon. If you just want to relax, set up on the white sandy beach or laze by the pool – take a dip to cool down, or just chill out.
One of our staff will take you out fishing, and the cook will prepare your catch for dinner that night. Visit our little, local village, a pleasant walk from the resort, where you can meet the friendly villagers and experience the culture of the Telos region. We can also arrange a boat trip on the river, to see the monkeys, bird life and lush tropical rainforest.
Atoll Travel tour packages to Monkeys Resort include return flights to Padang, on the west coast of Sumatra, all airport and harbour transfers, overnight accommodation at the Mercure Hotel in Padang for arrival/departure connections as required, fast boat from Padang harbour to/from the resort (approx 4-5 hours), 9 nights luxury beachfront villa accommodation, all meals, drinking water, coffee, fresh juices, surf guide and boats to the surf breaks.
